First California Stop
When we let our California friend, Leslie Lerner, know that we had changed plans again and were now driving down she knew that we'd be arriving pretty late so she made arrangements for us to stay with some friends of hers about an hour's drive North. This was like a dream for us since they operate a fabulous inn right on the Klamath River!
These now new friends, Dave and Barbara Gross, are owners of a beautiful place called the Requa Inn. This place, originally founded in 1880 and later rebuilt in the early 1900's, has redwood walls and woodwork throughout, but has modern facilities. It's really like a grand old house, and we noted that all the guests acted like family there.
Barbara greeted us like we were old friends (she obviously loves Leslie like we do!) and was the most gracious host you can imagine. We slept heavenly under the softest sheets in the world (no labels--Barb, where did you get these?) and were greeted in the morning with a home-made pancake-and-eggs breakfast.
They have great old photos on the walls showing the Inn in the early days, plus so many scenes of fishermen and boats and such. This shot shows the second dining area with an old piano, guitar and mandolin, ready for any musicians who might stay here.Julie and I took a brisk hike up the road past the inn and looked out to sea. The Klamath River runs into it just past their place.Dave was so busy with the chores that I didn't get a picture of him, but we did get a chance to talk about our mutual interest in dealing with bats. He built two sets of bat houses which are fixed at either end of the building to try to keep them from roosting in the attic area. (One set can be seen in the photo above on the top right side of the building.)
Below is a picture I snapped of a poster they have at the inn. I hope that any of you who are reading this can find a way to stay there!
